Once again one good period was enough to ensure victory and take home three more points. Malmö's netminder was the difference between the Redhawks and Västerås on Sunday and helped ensure a three one win. He had a great game minding the Malmö net, particularly in the first period. He is certainly well on his way towards living up to his nickname , "the wall".
"Osten" Wont Regret It Even though Corey Hirsch kept a clean sheet against Hammarby it was Wesslau who was handed the goalkeeping duties this Sunday. A decision which Wesslau said that Osten would not regret. "The wall" was impenetrable, saving 38 of 39 shots taken helping Malmö to that 3-1 win. Wesslau saved an impressive 97.4% of the shots taken on him, a performance that frustrated the hosts and made it nearly impossible for them to score.
A clean Sheet for half the match! Wesslau was overly busy for most of the first period in an otherwise freezing Rocklundahallen, a period in which he saved seventeen shots. This form continued into the second period before Västerås soon took over most of the play and killed Wesslau's shut out. A shot from Jimmie Lindström just in front of goal sneaked past Wesslau and gave the hosts a one goal lead.
Moravec scores his first! A reply followed soon enough, and it was a new version of the first line that did the damage. Just 34 seconds after Västerås' opener Söderbergh passed to Riihijärvi and eventually the puck found its way to David Moravec who shot into a half empty net. The game was tied. Later Malmö had the chance to take the lead when playing five on three but that was not to be. The game was very much alive at the start of the third period all thanks to one man, Gustaf Wesslau.
Söderbergh Scores Again It happens sometimes. Despite pressing for most of the game Västerås lost both the initiative and the effort, instead it was the Redhawks who looked the classier outfit. Moravec laid up a fine pass for Söderbergh who made himself free and made it two one to the Redhawks. A long awaited goal from Calle who has had plenty opportunity, even in this game, but had little success.
Tomik Drives the Nail in the Coffin Juts four minutes after Söderbergh's goal Janne Öberg and friends put together a fine offensive movement. Despite losing the puck Stepanek put in a fine check, regained possession and passed the puck to Öberg. Öberg found Tomik who was free right in front of the goal who after a couple of deeks put between the keepers legs to make the score 3-1. From here the match was won. Wesslau continued in good form and Västerås did not dominate as they did before.
The Czechs Started Well The new Czech players who debuted this weekend palyed well enough to get satisfactory grades, both Stepanek and Moravec. Stepanek is not quick but is good on the puck and is well able to position him. He lost possession on just one pass and missed just one clearance. Big and physical but not clumsy. Moravec who did not have a great night on Friday showed something very different today. Playing with Söderbergh and Riihijärvi he found a whole new paltform with which to show what hoe could do. Making 1+2 in his first two games for the Redhawks of course gives a passing grade for our new offensive weapon.
Next Match, Malmö Redhawks v Rögle BK (Malmö Isstadion) Wednesday Feb 15th -pm
