2007-04-02 Skin of Teeth Syndrome |
If teeth had skin it could not be tighter than the end of the 2007 Kvalserien. Even with one minute to go things were unclear as to what was going to happen. When that minute expired it was heartbreak for Malmö. A monumental last ten minutes which almost rescued the impossible was just not long enough. The despair and disappointment on both the players and fans faces was there for all to see. For the leadership within the organization that despondency must soon turn to a focus on putting a plan together to get the Redhawks back into the Elitserien in time for the big move to their new home. |

2006-11-12 A NEW KING IN MALMÖ |
At the start of the Elitserien 2006-2007 campaign hopes were high of a successful season at Malmö Redhawks. Nineteen games in and most of those hopes have been deflated. Rock bottom in the league, things had to change. Despite some players leaving the club fortunes did not improve and this weekend Malmö Redhawks made, what was, a very difficult decision. Head coach Lars Osten Bergström was to be replaced. Club director Thomas Stenberg says "We were happy with Ostens efforts last year but have not had the development we had hoped for this season. Therefore we have made the decision to bring new blood in to help bring about the necessary changes." |

2006-04-13 ELITE TIMES AHEAD |
For those who arrived at Malmö Isstadion on Wednesday last the tension was already palpable. For those who arrived just before the puck dropped it was almost unbearable. The win against Skellefteå the previous week alongside Södertälje dropping points made the things fairly easy to predict. Malmö needed to beat Leksand to open the door to elite hockey in the autumn. |

2006-04-05 One Step Closer |
Malmö have had it difficult against Skellefteå all season having been beaten on all three previous meetings of the two teams. Finally on Monday night the Redhawks claimed a well deserved victory, but what better time to claim just rewards. While Malmö were beating AIK by two goals to one Södertalje were dropping points at Leksand. With a little maths works after the game the Malmö fans all came to the same conclusion, a win against Leksand at home on Wednesday means Elitserien ice hockey in Malmö next season. |

2006-04-03 And then there were three! |
Six teams started this Kvalserien, now only three are left with any chance of making the step up to the Elitserien. Malmö, Skellefteå and Södertälje are the only teams with any realistic chance of getting that much desired promotion. Rögle still have a mathematical chance of making it but you would need a calculator with space for a lot of numbers to try and work out their odds of challenging for one of the top two spots. Put another way, if Malmö want to play Elitserien hockey next year, they have a lot of work to do over the next seven days. The good news for Malmö is that they are in full control of their own destiny. Win all of the last three games and they will be promoted. Simple, isn't it? |

HISTORY:
Founded in 1972 Malmö Redhawks was founded in 1972 when the club separated from Malmö FF, a football/soccer club in Malmö. From the beginning the club was called "Malmö IF" (Malmö Icehockey Federation), or the shorter nickname "Mif".
Reaching the top division Malmö IF played for more than 15 seasons in lower divisions, but in the end of the 80's the club aimed for the top with president Percy Nilsson in the frontline and a lot of experienced elite-players were traded to Malmö. Names like Raimo Helminen (FIN), Peter Lindmark and Peter Andersson scared and beat most teams, and in 1990 Malmö IF had reached the top division in Sweden - "Elitserien"!
Swedish champions Later, Malmö IF signed Peter Sundström and Mats Näslund with NHL-merits. It wouldn't take long for the already star-filled team to reach even higher. In 1992, Malmö were named Swedish Champions after winning the final series 3-2 against Djurgårdens IF. Later the same year, Malmö IF were also named European Champions after winning a tight final game where Dynamo Moscow were beat after penalty shots.
In 1994 it was time for the second gold medal in the Swedish championships. A young Peter Forsberg and his MoDo had a 2-0 advantage in the final series, but three games later Malmö IF had won the championship with 3-2.
Mid 90's In 1995 Tomas Sandström came to Malmö to play during the lockout, and Malmö also won a showgame against Wayne Gretzky's "99 Allstars" at Malmö Isstadion. Tomas Sandström returned to Malmö after his NHL-career, and played with the Redhawks for three years before quitting hockey. Malmö IF changed name to Malmö Redhawks and colours to black/red/white in 1996, with the main reason that the new profile would sell more souvenirs.
NHL-products from Malmö NHL-players Kim Johnsson (NY Rangers, Philadelphia) and Andreas Lilja (Los Angeles, Florida, Nashville, Detroit) started their careers in Malmö Redhawks, more or less, and defensemen Ricard Persson (New Jersey, St.Louis, Ottawa) and Niclas Hävelid (Anaheim, Atlanta) played in Malmö before moving over the Atlantic. The latest export from Malmö to the NHL is Carl Söderberg, who's went all the way from Redhawks iceskatingschool to the seniour squad and to St.Louis Blues in the NHL.
Today The Redhawks had a weak season during the NHL-lockout 2004/2005, and was degraded to the 2nd division - Hockeyallsvenskan. But after a really good season 2005/2006, with a total of 41 wins in 52 matches, Malmö Redhawks now is back in the top league - Elitserien, for the season 2006/2007. The fans were singing "vi ska tillbaka!" ("we're going back!") the whole season, and head coach Lars Bergström once said "I hope the fans will continue with singing those words now when we'll play in Elitserien, we are going back, back to the absolute top of Swedish hockey!".
