Steady Progress
[Update Week 46 ]
Malmö Redhawks finally got the opportunity to play on home ice after a long road trip. IK Oskarshamn(IKO) were the visitors on Sunday and for Malmö revenge was the name of the game. IKO had beaten Malmö earlier in the season and it was time for the Redhawks to point out who was boss.
Malmö Redhawks v IK Oskarshamn Before the puck dropped in this one there was a moments silence to honour the memory of Benny Hansen, a tribute impeccably kept by everyone in the stadium. The game was played before one of Malmös biggest crowds of the season and despite it not being a spectacular match coach Bergström must be pleased with the result. A goal in each period saw the Redhawks run out with a 3-1 victory. Carl Soderberg continued his point scoring blitz with a goal and two assists. Kim Staal however was the star of the show, scoring twice. Corey Hirsch continued his impressive performances in Malmös goal and with one spectacular save in the third he is quickly becoming one of the most popular players in the squad. You can view the stats for this game here and see photographs here.
Nykoping v Malmö Redhawks Earlier in the week the Redhawks travelled to Nykoping. The players were obviously glad of the short break as they seemed to approach this game with renewed energy. It turned out to be a comfortable 5-0 victory for the away team, another good addition to the goal scored column and yet another shut out for Hirsch. A hat trick for Carl Soderberg was the highlight of the evening and goals from Andre Savage and Robert Tomik made Coach Bergstrom a very happy man. Stats available here.
Marcus Magnertoft Redhawks left winger Marcus Magnertoft has been forced to retire from professional ice hockey. He has suffered from a few concussions in his career and the specialists at Malmö hospital recommended that he hang up his skates. Magnertoft first came to Malmö as a junior in 1993. He was part of the championship winning team in 1994. In the time since then he has played 549 games for the Redhawks ?A team? which makes him the most experienced player at the club. He always played with his heart for the team and became one of the most respected players from the fans perspective.
Halmstad Hammers Allsvenskan bottom club, Halmstad Hammers, have declared for bankruptcy. They were in some financial trouble at the start of the season and a poor position in the league has not helped. All of their results have been scratched and some changes have been made to the schedule of matches. Apart from losing an 8-2 win over the Hammers last month the biggest impact on the Redhawks will be two extra matches against local arch rivals Rögle BK. They will play in Malmö on February 15th and up in Rögle on February 27th.
