Weekly recap 43

Here's this week's recent news, for all of our friends living in other places than Sweden!

Last week, the team was practicing a lot, and they also had two days off. The players were free to spend time with their families and friends, and relax to be fully prepared for the weekend’s games.
A map of Sweden, and the places which are visited in week 43 and 44.

On Friday, the Redhawks took some air under their wings again, and flew to Stockholm. They went by bus from Stockholm to Uppsala, where they would play against Almtuna IS in Gränbyhallen. Uppsala is by the way the hometown of Redhawks-players Mikael Wahlberg and Markus Matthiasson.

Marcus Ragnarsson is the big profile in Almtuna, and he’s also the captain of the team. Last year, Ragnarsson went back home during the NHL lockout, and I guess he preferred to live with his family back home in Sweden, even if he could have played some more years in the NHL. Some people say he’s the best defenseman playing in Sweden this year, including Elitserien.

Ragnarsson had an assist to Almtuna’s second scoring that gave them a 2-0-lead, but the Redhawks made it 2-1 before the second period was over. In the third act, Redhawks were quite dominant and Almtuna had some major problems to keep their lead. When Ragnarsson was punished with a 2 minute penalty, Redhawks made it 2-2 through the young supertalent Carl Söderberg who is the overall scoring leader in HockeyAllsvenskan (16 points in 11 games), and he celebrated his 20th birthday in less than a month ago.

The game went to sudden death, and Robert Tomik scored the important 2-3 goal which gave Malmö the 2-pointer and left Almtuna with one. Tomik’s goal also kept the Redhawks as number one in HockeyAllsvenskan.

The next game was played on Sunday when the Redhawks took on Sundsvall. Malmö Redhawks scored two late goals in the first period (Frylén and Öberg). And that was all scoring for that game. Corey Hirsch played a great game and stopped everything that came at him, and Corey could count in his third shoutout in 11 games.

After 11 games played, the Redhawks is placed 1st in HockeyAllsvenskan, with the same amount of points as Rögle BK placed 2nd. Rögle is not only a top-candidate, the team is also the arch rival of Malmö Redhawks. The teams will play each other on November 30th, in Malmö.

This week will be quite similar to the last one. The team will be practicing, and the weekend will be another journey to the north parts of Sweden when the Redhawks will play on road against Skellefteå, and Björklöven from Umeå.
