Weekly recap
Here's this week's recent news, for all of our friends living in other places than Sweden!
On Wednesday, Malmö took on Bofors Bobcats on a road game. Usually, the players travel by bus to most games on road, but this time the team would travel with airplane. Coach Bergström said on Tuesday evening that everything was just perfect, the team would be traveling the 500 kilometers in a quick way and get lots of time to rest and prepare for the game. But everything didnt go that well, and because of a heavy mist, the flight couldnt land in Karlstad as it was planned. After several tries, they had to land in Örebro and the whole schedule was delayed for Malmö Redhawks.
The game in Karlskoga versus Bofors Bobcats started well anyway. Redhawks went up to a early 0-3-lead after goals by Juha Riihijärvi, Robert Tomik and André Savage. When the second period started, the team was impossible to identify. They had lost most of the initiative and skating ability, and were forced to play boxplay almost the whole period. They did that extremely well, though, but when the third was about to start, Bofors had come up to a 2-3-result.
Bofors tried everything they could to make it 3-3, and pulled their goalie when the game went to its end. Just seven seconds later, André Savage scored his second and Malmö Redhawks fourth goal, and killed the game. Three points went back home to Malmö.
On Friday, Hammarby came to visit Malmö Isstadion. They played pretty good for one period, but then there was just one team on the ice. Malmö Redhawks won the game 9-0 (2-0, 2-0, 5-0), and the opponents coach thought that their goalkeeper were their best player.
Just 17 hours later, it was time for the next game. Västerås IK, one of the better teams in the league, came to Malmö. And played well. They had a 0-2-lead before Kim Staal made it 1-2 with minutes left to go of the first act. Västerås continued to play well, bur Malmö Redhawks made it 2-2 by Markus Matthiasson in the second period. The third act were scoring-less, and then it was time for sudden death, four on four, in maximum five minutes. Redhawks got to play powerplay, and 21 seconds later, the team captain Juha Riihijärvi scored 3-2 and saved the bonus point to the Redhawks.
Now its time for several days of resting and practicing, next weekend its time for a major road trip. Malmö Redhawks travel to Uppsala to meet Almtuna, and then to Sundsvall. Until then, we hope that Marcus Olsson, Patrik Hersley and Jonathan Coleman will be back after injuries.
